I'm Bill and I'm an addict.
|
That simple confession has made probably the single biggest change of my life.
Twenty years ago today. May 1, 1989, I got sick and tired of being sick and tired, and changed my life of drugs and alcohol for a new one with the help of the fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous. I'll always be an addict, it is important for me to remember that. We don't get cured, although we DO get better, when we want to. We are people caught in the grips of a continuing and progressive illness whose ends are always the same - jails, institutions and death. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference, just for today.

the new month | |||||||
|
Hi all!
Congrats on the 20 years sober Huggy! That is something to be proud of and yet you are humble enough to know it will always be an ongoing thing. That's something all too many people do not understand. Personally I have never drank nor done drugs. I grew up with alcoholism in my family and made up my mind early on that I did not want to act that way. Addiction is often an inherited trait and, even though I do not drink, I do have an addictive side to me. It's just a matter of staying away from the kind of addictions that can be real problems. I see you started the new thread after 3:00 AM (if that is Eastern time being shown). I could have beat you to it but, I decided to play nice and let others take their turns. Besides, I wanted to start my drive scan so that it could run over night rather than doing it today since I was out. Speaking of being out....it's time for another edition of "At The Cinema". Today I saw "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Now, I realize this is likely not the type of film that many of you would be interested in but, you may know people that are into comic book movies. This film gives more back story to the character of Logan/Wolverine than the character has ever really had (to my knowledge anyway). The idea was good but the execution was lacking in many areas. There are too many characters added that were created just for the movie and this serves to take up time that could be used on the characters that are familiar within the X-men universe. One character that is in the film is Gambit. For those of you that don't know, Gambit is a character that the fan boys (and fan girls) have been lobbying to see in an X-men movie ever since the first one came out several years ago. Now that their wish has been granted I am wondering if it fulfilled expectation. My guess is that it came up a little shy. On the whole the movie tends to be slow. The first 30 minutes or so are especially slow but, after that, it does pick up in pace a little bit. I think the only people that will be really happy with this film are the truly rabid fan boys...and girls. I may be a fan boy at heart but I'm just not enough of one to give this film too high of a score. I think that I will give this one a "C" for being too slow and having too many characters. Oh, while there is a lot of violence there is very little blood. However, because of some of the more violent acts I would suggest thinking long and hard before taking very young children. Now, if you want something a little more family friendly, try "17 Again." I saw "17 Again" last Sunday. It had already been out a week by that point. The Basic story is that Matthew Perry plays a man who feels that his life would have been better had he finished playing in "the big game" during his senior year in high school. In a move that is similar to a plot point from the 90's film "Mr. Destiny" he is given the chance to change his life. It's hard to give much detail without blowing the whole movie but, much of the story deals with the main character seeing things from a different perspective as he interacts with his son and daughter who have no clue that he is their dad. While this is a film you could see with the family I would say that younger kids may get bored with it easily. It will probably appeal most to young girls because of star Zac Effron. By the way, it should go without saying that you need to suspend disbelief to in order to get past the idea that Zac Effron could grow up to be Matthew Perry. I'm gonna give "17 Again" a "B-". It's not a bad film but the story idea is hardly original nor is this the best execution of this sort of plot. Next time I plan to tell you about the reboot of "Star Trek" from director J.J. Abrams. I plan to see that one the day it comes out but things don't always go as planned do they? That's all for this edition of "At the Cinema", the over-priced concession stand is closed.

$5 Jujubes | |||||||
|
Yeah, the concession stand is really over priced. That's where the theatre makes its money. The ticket price goes to the
movie companies. That's why the concession stand is just as highly priced at the discount theatres as it is in the theatres that show first run movies.
Many theatres offer "deals" where you get free re-fills. The AMC Star Gratiot (which is where I go) has re-fills on the large pop and popcorn (also known as a #1 combo). I like that deal because for the times I see two movies back to back I have my stuff for both films. I ALWAYS get a refill on my pop just to make the price a little more worth it. Besides, it comes in handy to have a cold drink as I walk toward the mall where I catch the bus home. By the way, do they even still make Jujubes?

I am grateful that I didn't start getting high until I got out of school. It was fun when it started and I could maintain...eventually it became a "job" and I fully understood what "permabuzz" means. There is more to it tan "not drinking" or "not using drugs"...and it's one of those things someone who is not in this situation can never fully understand nor appreciate. Drinking was never my monkey. I told myself "At least I can keep drinking." But at my first meeting I learned: Thinking of alcohol as being different from other drugs has caused a great many addicts to relapse. We cannot afford to be confused about this. Alcohol is a drug and we must abstain from all drugs in order to recover. Being alcohol and drug free has brought me more friends than I lost. I have survived things that have killed others...

James wrote:Yes they do. They were made by the Henry Heide Co. then Hershey bought the Heide co. in 1995. You can buy them online from companies like Candy Direct if you can't find them locally. They have them in the 1.5 ounce box for $23.25 / pack of 24, the "movie size" 6.5 ounce box for $15.35/pack of 12, and if you are a really hardcore fan, you can get a 7 pound bulk bag for $21.95. There is even a Jujube fan page devoted to all things jujube.

Great points Hugg.
Too many kids start drinking thinking it's all fun and games. Same with the drugs. And don't you just love the rationalization that so many use that smoking a joint is no worse than drinking a beer? As I said, I made a choice to not even start because of what I grew up with. I have tasted beer and wine and occasionally use them for cooking. They taste nasty as a drink in my opinion but cooking with them changes the properties as well as burning off most of the alcohol. It's funny to me how wine tastes like rancid grape juice (which essentially it is) when you drink it but when used in a dish and heated it adds a sweetness and a mellow flavor. For those of you that are interested, a slash of red wine or sherry to de-glaze the pan and a little tomato paste (or tomato sauce) mixed in makes a nice topping for beef (good on a beef sandwich). Oh, and add some fresh cracked pepper and a little garlic powder (NOT garlic salt). How many calories are in this? Who cares! It tastes good. Just walk around the block a few dozen times and it all evens out. |

I don't drink the stuff...

I have a bottle of Scotch that I use for cooking. Works well for that. I've tasted scotch a few times, I
know how it got its name - it tastes like scotch! Scotch tape, that is.

RE: the taste of Scotch | |||||||
|
I have never tasted Scotch nor used it in cooking. I did use Jack Daniels once to marinate steak for the grill. That did NOT
turn out too well. JD gave the beef a smell similar to nail polish remover.
I have since learned that you shouldn't marinate in whiskey for too long. I also learned that whiskey and honey to not mix too well and thus just slide off the meat when used as a "mop". Oh, and if you want Bourbon then don't get Jack Daniels. JD might be cheaper and technically they are both whiskey but Bourbon has a different distillation and aging process than JD. Though admittedly I have no clue how either tastes as a drink.

Booze | |||||||
James wrote:One of the very few forms of hard liquor that I *DID* like was Jim Beam sour mash bourbon (yellow label). I don't know if they even make it anymore. I liked it in comparison, but it was not my first "drug of choice", probably fourth or fifth. The scotch was some we had here (I still have probably 3/4 of a bottle). My father-in-law was treasurer of a Teamsters local (Strohs), but he didn't drink either. When he passed away, there were probably a dozen, sealed bottles of this "12 year old" scotch going back to the mid 60's. All but this partial bottle have been given away over the years, none of us drink either. So this bottle I have downstairs, stored in the fallout shelter, was probably actually made in the early 50's, so it has to be going on 60 years old (way over 50). People who know about scotch tell me it only gets better with age. I gotta tell you this. My first wife came from a family of heavy drinkers. Most of them lived in the Allegan / Ottawa county area (she lives in Bentheim in Allegan county, last I heard). My mother-in-law, Elizabeth, was a wonderful lady who didn't drink. But the guys would come to her trailer from time to time, drunk, carrying their fifths, and carry on until the late hours...theen usually leave their booze (what was left of it) behind. Then she'd take these almost empty bottles and put them in a back room. One night, one of the guys came by and asked her, "Lizzie, have you got any booze here?" She said "You know, I think I do..." she went in back, and rather than give the guy all these almost empty bottles, she mixed them all together - whiskey, gin, vodka, scotch, wine, schnapps - whatever was there - and ended up with almost a full fifth. The guy was grateful, took the bottle and left. But word must have gotten around. Nobody EVER left a bottle of booze at Lizzie's trailer after that.

booze and cars don't mix.....except here on the board
|
Benny,
I'm sorry to hear how your brother died. Drinking and driving definitely don't mix. As I mentioned I grew up in an alcoholic household. I could mention some things to reinforce the "drinking and driving don't mix" thing but, it may not be the best place for that since it's such a public forum. Anyway, as you requested here is the picture of the Model - T my Mom had me order for my Grandpa's birthday:
As I mentioned in my e-mail, I like the one I found with the top down more.
They are both replicas of the 1925 Ford Model - T Runabout. I just think the top down looks better but, like I said, my Mom is paying for it. If we can we are going to also get a replica of a 1912 Model - T roadster (1912 being the year my Grandpa was born). Here's a pic of that one:
The significance of the Model - T is that it was the first car my Grandpa ever owned. From what I am told he did not have it long because his dad, my great-grandpa, sold it without telling him (what a tool, right?) I have no clue what model year the one my Grandpa owned was. If I knew I would have tried to find that specific one. I did find an actual Model - T for sale on Craig's List....for just under $13,000. Kind of pricey even if we could afford it. Besides, Grandpa hasn't driven for at least 4 or 5 years....maybe 6 (I remember he was definitely over 90 when he stopped). |

A Model-T update | |||||||
|
For those of you that care, I just ordered the 1912 Model-T roadster diecast replica that I had mentioned before.
As you saw in my last post, I explained the significance of 1912 is that it's the year my Grandpa was born. As for the Model-T, that was the first car he ever owned. We don't know what year the one he had was but it was most likely older than a 1926 model since he bought it when he was 14 years old (and he turned 14 in 1926). Hey, my Grandpa was 14 when Chuck Berry was born. Doing math can be freaky can't it? Ok, catch you all later! |

I collect dust.
As for the photos, I can't take the credit. All I did was copy them and paste them here. In fact, the picture of the roadster is also a hyperlink (as is the photo I got from your My Space page of you and the Talman guitar). Clicking on it will take you to the site where I ordered that one. My mom had me go with the express shipping on the roadster so that one should definitely be here before we go to Tennessee. With any luck the "Runabout" will arrive before then too. Catch ya later!
