Hidey Ho all!

I thought I'd see if I could kick of the new month. I have been thinking of the thread title for a while (I like to do word play).

I don't have too much to say right now.

I spent the afternoon mowing lawns (a neighbor's and ours). I don't mind mowing when it's not excessively hot....and today was not overly hot at all.

I was thinking of going to the movies tomorrow....um, make that today (since I plan to post this after midnight making it officially Wednesday). The thing is that I realized if I saw two movies like I was planning then I would miss the Dr. Doo Wop Show. So, I am thinking of going to the movies on Thursday instead (unless I put it off till the holiday crowds might not be as bad).

Oh! I had thought of having the thread title say "when JULY on the beach to get tan while listening to the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett" but I thought that may have been too wordy.

Anyway this seems long enough of a post to get the month started.

It's that time of the week again. Here's the weekly e-mail to Benny/recap.

It's 5:00 and I'm Listening to the Doctor Doo Wop Show

Hey Benny,

Here I am at my computer listening to the show. It's a time for me to relax after spending the day doing my computer maintenance.

Well, ok, so I didn't spend all day doing the maintainence. I just spent the morning doing it. Just before the show came on I finished up getting a song I needed to complete a digital version of the Harry Chapin album "Greatest Stories Live". It's a good album in case you would like to check it out.

I just tried dialing Doc Franklin's phone and it went to the menu for voice mail and paging him or what not. He missed someone on his list of people that just passed away. I read that Fayette Pinkney from The Three Degrees passed away.

I just called again and Dr. Franklin picked up but he couldn't hear me apparently which explains why I an now hearing you telling him that his phone is ringing several seconds later. LOL

Ok, I called a third time and the Doc picked up but it wasn't working. He didn't know who Fayette Pinkney was. I am actually surprised at that. He didn't know the group she was in either. I don;t know who she was or the group either but I am a young whipper snapper and her songs were way before my time (LOL). It lists a few song titles in the article I read on AOL but none of the titles sound familiar. it says "The trio released several singles, including 'Gee Baby (I'm Sorry)' and 'Maybe,' which found success on the Billboard R&B charts before signing with Philadelphia International Records in 1973."

OH MY GOD!!!!!! Little Richard did NOT do "I Hear You Knockin"!! That's a Fats Domino song! See now I have a REAL reason to call in and set you straight but since the phone setup isn't working it's kinda pointless.

Ok, I just looked it up. "I Hear You Knockin'" was written by Dave Bartholomew and Pearl King and the first recording of it was by Smiley Lewis. Gale Storm's version was a cover and from what the entry on Wikipedia says it came out the same year as the original by Smiley Lewis. In fact, Fats Domino's version was also in 1955. Three versions of the same song in one year? There's something you won't see these days what with all these "artists" thinking that have to be "original". You only got part of it when you just said its a record for the most consecutive songs on the show. It's the most consecutive songs without you fuys talking over them LOL.

It's looking a bit cloudy here in Warren. If the weather is similar up where you are right now it may be that it's better that you are indoors at Pete's Coney rather than outdoors at O' Toole's. I don't think it's raining right now but it definitely looks like it could storm any time (it could be raining a little, I just don't feel like going upstairs to look out a regular window).

Hey, The Doc saw Chuck Berry at the State Fair? I wonder if it was the same year I went? I think it was 1996 or 1997. It was Chuck Berry and Little Richard on a double bill. It was a really good show. The crappy part is that I couldn't really enjoy the fair because I had to stake out my seat to make sure I wasn't way in the back.

What's with all the clips from "The Buddy Holly Story"? It's a good movie but the genuine recordings by Buddy Holly are better.

I like all the Doo Wop you guys have playing tonight. I don't think I've heard this much actual doo wop on the show in a long time....if ever. OHHHHH, I see why now! Doctor Franklin has been trying to get his phone working!

I wonder if he has the same model I do? Mine is a Nokia model 2610b. It has a headset jack but I can't find one that will work with it. Any I have tried the phone just says its an "incompatible accessory" or some such. I tried web sites and several stores and no one has a headset that will work on this cheapy-ola phone.

Ya know, I never thought those Michael Jackson shows in the UK were ever gonna happen even before he died. But I did read today on the inter-web that the promoter is thinking of turning those shows into tribute concerts. I wonder if that means he doesn't want to have to offer refunds? The sad part is that we haven't even scratched the surface of the greed that "Wacko Jacko's" death will bring out in various people.

CLYDE!!! I LOVE that name. I had several cats that I named Clyde (Clyde now referred to as "proto-type Clyde", Clyde now referred to as "Big Clyde" and Clyde a.k.a. "Baby Clyde"). My Mom even had an Uncle named Clyde.

I like Clyde's accent too. It's like what I hear when I go down to Tennessee for my Grandpa's birthday celebrations. No need for Clyde to know I call his state "KenSUCKY". I will have to go through that state many more times without incident before I stop calling it that. Speaking of which, the traffic tie up the other week because of that Gratiot cruise in East Point gave me flashbacks of those freakin' backups in KenSUCKY.

Oh, next week if anyone gives their web site over the air make sure they talk S-L-O-W-L-Y. That way I can be sure to get it to put on the message board. Of course that is dependent on me being home from my Doctor appointment before the show starts. My appointment is at 3:00 but sometimes I can spend a few hours there....much of that is spent just waiting. I like my doctor so it's not as bad as it could be like if I had a doctor I couldn't stand...like my last doctor.

It occurs to me that maybe I should update you. It was cancer on my Dad's ear. They removed most of it (the cancer, NOT the ear) and will be keeping an eye on what they didn't get.

I was telling my Aunt about it and she told me that she had cancer on her ear too and another Aunt had cancer on her nose. I know skin cancer is not considered to be genetically linked so no need to tell me I need to be tested like you did on the air when the Doc was talking about prostate cancer....and who was it that said he'd never had a prostate exam? Oh yeah, it was YOU! LOL

Ok, that's a more recent recording of "Oh how happy" by the Shades of Blue. It sounds ok but it isn't as smooth as the original. (I would be very surprised is you were to say you can't hear the difference)

It's 6:50, almost time for that ELO song. I guess I should close this e-mail out now.

If I am home in time to listen to the show next week and "IF" Dr. Franklin has his phone setup working again maybe I will call in again. If the Doc has to get another phone hopefully he will stick with AT&T so that it's only the $1 per day charge for me accessing the system but free for the call itself.

Oh, I am thinking "IF" I ever find a way to make that fund raiser a reality it could be cool to have the Loredos or the Shades of Blue. I saw the Loredos several years ago when they performed at a special event for the anniversary of Eastland Mall...the 25th anniversary I think...it was in 1992 I think and I believe the mall opened the same year my parents were married so 1992 should be right. Funny that I'm talking about my dream hear as the Doc is playing that song LOL. And, yes, I did hear you mentioning about how I know the end is at hand when you play that song.

Movie reviews: "Ice Age 3" and "Public Enemies"

It's time once again for "AT THE CINEMA!"

Today I saw "Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and "Public Enemies."

"Ice Age 3" is the continuing adventures of Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth and Diego the saber-toothed tiger. In this film Manny and his mate Elly (introduced in Ice Age 2) are expecting a baby. As Manny prepares for the new arrival Sid is left feeling left out and lonely. Meanwhile Diego fears he is losing his edge as a natural predator.

Sid ends up falling into a frozen cave where he discovers eggs which he names Sheldon, Eggbert and Yolko. He decides to keep the eggs and raise the hatchlings as his own. When Manny finds out about the eggs he tells Sid to return them at one but Sid ignores his friend.

The eggs hatch and Sid is left with three T-rex babies to care for. After the three young T-rexes destroy the play ground Manny has made for his expected baby, as well as terrorizing the other members of the community, Sid is forced to take his babies back to their rightful parent.

I could give further details but I don;t think that's necessary.

Ok, here's the deal: This is not a great film but it is better than Ice Age 2...at least in my opinion. Some of the story is a bit hollow. It appears to me that this is the result of cutting aspects of certain plot points from the story while leaving small details in that go no where.

Oh for those of you that are fans of the character Scrat, he is perhaps the best part of this film.

It's a good film to see if you want to give your kids an outing but you may want to wait for it to hit the discount theatres.

The other film was "Public Enemies".

This is the storie of John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and the FBI's hunt for him.

I will admit that I am not any sort of expert on the story of Dillinger so I cannot attest to the accuracy of this movie.

This film tends to be a bit slow through most of the story. It lacks details about who most of the people are and what part they played in the history of crime.

While J. Edgar Hoover made it a point to stop Dillinger by making him "public enemy number 1" the film makes little use of Hoover and instead focuses on Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), the agent assigned the task of stopping Dillenger.

As I said this film is a bit slow. It would be different if it were slow because it gets too bogged down in details of the characters but that isn't the case.

Some little things that bothered me (even if they are totally unimportant to the telling of the story): in one scene Dillinger turns on a bed-side radio and it instantly has sound....a tube radio needs a little warm up time before you hear anything (by the way Huggy, there are at least 3 or 4 really nice old radios in this film LOL). Another tiny little detail that bugs the crap out of me is that in a particular scene the FBI agents ask to see the ID of a man in his apartment and the man tells his wife to get his wallet, When she comes back into the room she shows the agent the driver's license and says "cute huh?" which I take to be a reference to the photo of her husband (they dont show the license so I am just guessing as to what she is referring to). The thing is that in the 1930's they didn't put photo's on driver's licenses! How do I know this? Well, I had an Uncle who had a license from back around that time (maybe slightly after the period of the film...I'm not sure). This was the only license my Uncle ever had. His reasoning is that they gave you a license and it was supposed to be good for life. So, he only ever had the one license that had no photo....but I digress.

If you are going to see "Public Enemies" expecting a well made period piece and maybe learn about people like John Dillinger then you will probably be disappointed. Likewise if you are expecting to see an action packed gangster flick (some teens sitting behind me had no clue what the movie was about before it started, they just thought it would be a good action movie).

If you must see this one on the big screen I might siggest waiting for it to hit the discount theatres. Otherwise just wait for it to hit DVD.

I am giving "Ice Age 3" a "C". It's hardly original but it's an acceptable film.

I am giving "Public Enemies" a "D". It's not the worst film in the world but it has a lot of room for improvement.

After going to the movies I did my usual circuit of window shopping before catching the bus home.

I did find that book by Bob Harris at Borders. It costs $20 ($19.99 to be more accurate). A lot of money for such a thin book.

I did check out some of the photos, including the one of you in your leather jacket. It's funny to see you with more hair...or LESS hair....depending on how you think about it LOL.

On another topic I heard you saying on the Doc Doo Wop Show about your daughter being on one of those court shows. Did you say it was "Judge Joe Brown"? Has her episode aired yet? Did she win? Does she wish now that she had dealt with the issue privately instead of airing dirty laundry for the whole world to see?

I only caught a little of what you said about that because it was during the time I was talking to Doc Franklin on the phone and I had my speakers down low...besides the time delay can be confusing when talking to you guys on the phone and then hearing stuff more than 10 seconds later on my computer that I heard on the phone just before.

First of all. the MARC (Michigan Antique Radio Club) Extravaganza starts in one week in Lansing. Very cool. This year, music will be by The Rock Bottom Mining Company (Bluegrass). I know what you mean about things being incorrect in movies. There was one brief scene in Dream Girls that was supposedly in Detroit...there were several large palm trees in the distance. Maybe some people wouldn't catch that, if you live in California or Florida where palm trees are ubiquitous, but I don't know ANY place in Detroit where you can see a real live palm tree outside in the distance.

I have not seen Public Enemy. You are right in most cases tubes can take a half minute or so to warm up. {Oh oh, he's going to get technical now! Sheesh!} Most tubes used in radios and TVs are called "Indirectly Heated" where they use a separate heater and cathode. It takes time for the heater to warm the cathode; thus the delay (I won't go into explaining why, just suffice it to say there is a good reason for it). The first tubes made (and some later ones are called "Directly Heated" where they do not use a heater and cathode, they use a filament that also serves as a cathode. In most of these radios the filament is very light and it starts emitting electrons almost immediately. I have a 1941 Philco portable (like this one)

It has directly heated tubes and if it is operating on batteries, it will spring to life almost immediately when it is turned on. If it is plugged in to AC it takes a little longer because the rectifier tube (the one at the far right) is indirectly heated.

Directly heated tubes use less filament power so it helps the batteries to last longer. But there are also several drawbacks that kept them primarily to battery operated or AC/DC radios. So, depending on the radio, that may or may not be correct.

Some of my radio friends see a movie like that and note things like "That radio has the wrong knobs!" or something like that. There is an error with the radio used "A Christmas Story"; we discussed that on the antique radios group. although I don't remember what it was.

I had something kind of weird happen a short time ago.

I was in the process of putting my friend's number in the contacts on my cell phone when it started to ring. My first thought was that I had accidentally clicked on a number and it dialed. Then it dawned on me that it wouldn't be ringing if I were calling out.

It only rang once and I didn't look that closely at the number. It didn't look like any number I would know. Then I checked the "missed calls" file and realized it was Doctor Franklin's cell.

I am thinking either he was going through his list of received calls and accidentally clicked on mine causing it to dial OR maybe someone found the phone he lost as was playing with it causing it to dial my number (which would be in the received calls unless he had deleted it from the list before losing that phone).

Anyway, it was kinda weird so, I thought I'd share it with you all.

I hope you are all out enjoying the nice weather on this 4th of July.

As for posting our IM conversation you should edit the post so that the color of what we said isn't black....black on black is kinda hard to read after all.

"I hear about this all the time ... kids getting shot, an innocent bystander caught up," he said, adding, "there are a lot of students down there. They need more security -- maybe police supervising the bus stop so nothing happens like that."

Hakim, who has owned the Shell station since 1993, said the neighborhood has gotten worse. He said he especially has had problems with school children.

"I've been trying to get the city to move that bus stop for a while now," he said of the one on the Southfield Freeway service drive, just north of Warren.

"The students cause all kinds of problems, hassling people. It's a pretty rough neighborhood, and it's gotten worse over the years."

Investigators spent several hours poring over the station's surveillance video, Hakim said. "They made a disc and took it with them," he said. "The video shows everything."

Police diverted traffic on Warren for several hours Tuesday and had blocked off the Warren exits from the north- and southbound Southfield Freeway. That snarled traffic for several blocks.

Meanwhile, a large crowd of onlookers and media watched at least two dozen police officers who examined the scene.

One youngster on a bicycle shook his head and said of the victims, "I guess they were just at the wrong place at the wrong time."

A woman glared at him. "No they weren't," she said.

"They were coming home from school. They were doing what they were supposed to be doing."

Police have identified one of the suspected shooters, according to The Detroit News reporting partner WXYZ-TV (Channel 7). The person was not in custody

Who's to blame?

That's sad to hear about. You gotta wonder who is to blame for stuff like that.

Ultimately of course the person who held the gun and pulled the trigger gets full credit but it's a bigger problem than that.

Parents are to blame for not taking enough interest in their childrens' lives. The government is to blame for making it harder and harder for parents to discipline their kids in an effective manner. People that are in the area as the crime happens is to blame because everyone is too scared to get involved these days. The media is to blame for sensationalizing such stories. Hollywood and the music industry are to blame for making the "gangsta" life appealing to kids. Lastly the people that live in an area are to blame for letting their home towns go to pot because they forget they should take pride in where they live.

There is a problem these days that a lot of people confuse "fear" with "respect". But then again the people that think they are the same probably wouldn't take the time to learn the difference.

But, hey, why should these kids that get into that life know what respect is? After all you have to be taught how to respect people and that's something that far too many people seem to be deficient in these days.

Have you ever noticed how many old people will pull that old "respect your elders" stuff yet they dont tend to treat many people with respect themselves?

Here's my way of looking at things: you should give everyone a certain amount of respect just for being a fellow traveller on the road of life. Anything more than that vourtesy amount has to be earned. How do you earn it? Simply by treating people with the respect you want them to show you. The basic principle of this has been around for thousands of years. As stated in the Bible "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Please don't mistake me quoting the Bible as a sign of me being religious. I actually have many issues with religion. But, I will admit, I see a lot of common sense in the things that religion tries to teach.

There's a new site called RUNPEE.com, it tells you that best time to leave a movie for a rest room break.

Detroit has a new Police Chief today. Some people are not happy about that. Mayor Dave Bing made the decision, he's supposed to explain today. AND one of the council members resigned as of today, Monica Conyers, John's wife. She is accused of taking kickbacks, and admits that she did.

I bought a sheet of the new Bob Hope stamps. They are very nice!!

Saw "The Search" episode on Cimarron Strip on Saturday. L.Q. Jones had a minor role, of course, he's a character actor - he needed an Emmy for that performance! It was like Cindy recording her "radio show" on my handheld (I gave it to her) - he would talk to himself and ANSWER. Cindy was interviewing people and doing both roles. I was hysterical.

The show UNSUNG on TVOne is so great! I saw the latest four over the weekend, Florence Ballard (born June 30), Shalamar, Melba Moore and Minnie Ripperton. All so very interesting. For instance, Jeffrey Daniel is documented doing the Moonwalk on British TV in 1982. He called it the Backslide, and actually, Bill Bailey did it in 1955, probably others before that, too. Michael asked Jeffrey to teach the Moonwalk to him, and also, Jeffrey choreographed Smooth Criminal (my favorite) and Bad. His birthday is August 24th.

Watched Banacek and WOW, George Peppard and Linda Evans (guest star) were gorgeous! I love when he wears hunter green to make his eyes greener. WORKS. A guy asked him if he was a football player cos that player was "a Polack" and Banacek stated firmly, "Polish. So was Copernicus." YES! He also spouted a few of those fake Polish proverbs that confuse his driver. God, I love that stuff.

Watched an indie film called "Approaching Union Square" on Sundance. It was about 11 people on a bus in NYC, and what their current problems were. Natch, I could relate...

Last night, I watched "Benjamin Button" AND LOVED IT. Omg. Loved it.

Oh, and read the whole book - Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. HOW I LOVED IT. It was sooooooooo good.

FINALLY got around to trying KGC

I FINALLY got around to trying the "grilled" chicken at KFC. It's "ok" but it's nothing to write home about.

It definitely doesn't look like it does in any of the ads (there are no grill marks). It has a slightly smokey taste. My guess is that they use liquid smoke in the preparation. Mostly I'd say it tastes like it's baked...it sure isn't grilled (hence why I put the word grilled in quotes in the beginning of this post).

Will I get it again? Maybe if I am out and feel like chicken but for some reason don't feel like fried chicken in that moment. Otherwise I will stick with regular ol' KFC (though I prefer the extra crispy variety).

ya I tried that checken ... samething I would eat it but not go out of my way to get it
I did the volcano taco at taco bell .. they went a little heavy on the volcano stuff .. and it was pretty hot

a lot of michel jackson stuff on TV today .....

Last night I had a thought about doing a Wikipedia article on Benny and the Jets or The Doctor Doo Wop Show....or both. (I had registered with Wikipedia for the express purpose of correcting a small detail on an article I had read)

The problem is I don't know enough of the back ground to do a decent entry on either. I know that the Doc mentioned having done the show for about 10 years now and I know that Benny and The Jets have been around in one form or another since at least 1973.

I figure in an article on the show I could add in names of frequent guests and other such things.

What would be the point? Well, it would be another way to let people know about the Doc Doo Wop Show and possibly get more people to post here as I could mention this board in an article on Benny and the Jets.

Plus, it would give me a project to fill my time LOL.

Any thoughts?

Oh, One more thing! Benny, what did you expect from the volcano tacos? I mean calling them "volcano tacos" is a pretty good hint they will be VERY hot. And in the commercials they do emphasize that aspect by showing the people having red faces like when a cartoon character eats something that's really hot. LMAO!

Hi all!

I made it back from my doctor appointment in time to catch the last 30 minutes of the show.

LOL just heard Benny memtion me as I'm typing this (would have been too much to do that while I was typing the e-mail to him?)

Well, here's what I had to say to Benny this week:

Hey Benny,

As I had mentioned I had a doctor appointment today. But, I made it home for the show...the last 30 minutes anyway.

You have that song "Hushabye" playing, a good tune.

I had to have blood taken today...yay. At least I didn't feel like a pin cushion today...they only had to stick me once.

Turns out I will likely miss the show...or most of it...again in three weeks. They asked if I wanted a morning or afternoon appointment and I always think afternoon is better because if I say morning they will tell me to be there at 8 or 9 which would be kinda rough for me since I often don't get up til 8.

That event with the Reflections and the Shades of Blue sounds like it will be fun. As I mentioned to you before I have seen the Reflections back around 1992.

Holy crap the song "Handy Man" is LOUD compared to your mics.

Hmm, I knew it was "Johnny B. Goode" even before the Doc started it but then I doubted myself when it didn't sound quite like any version I have ever heard. But, then I realized it was a karaoke version. Whoever arranged it is mixing guitar parts from other Chuck Berry songs into it. Not the worst version of JBG I've ever heard but not the best either.

Now on this repeat of "Handy Man" the volume seems a bit lower than it did the first time a few minutes ago.

Oh, I don't know if you read my post on the message board but I had the goofy thought about doing an article on Wikipedia on Benny and the Jets or the Doc Doo Wop Show...or both. I was going to start doing the article on Benny and the Jets until I realized I had no idea what to put on it. Well, that's not completely true. I know what I could put I just don't know the info.

Hey, I registered with Wikipedia just to change one wrong word in an article I saw I may as well make use of having registered right?

Well, I am guessing that the ELO song is coming up after "Rubber Ball" since it's 5:55 so, I guess I will close this abbreviated e-mail out then post it to the board for those people that read but never post.

Hi all!

I turned my computer on this morning and guess what! It didn't work!

Luckilly for me I have my old Windows 98 machine back that I had loaned to my sister-in-law. Unfortunately Windows 98 kinda sucks after having been use to XP for the past 3 years or so. It also doesn't help that my sister-in-law....or someone she let use the computer....made changes to several settings.

I am hoping to get my XP machine working again in time for the Doctor Doo Wop Show this Wednesday since I dont think I have a program on this comp that can access the feed.
