I had to find a way to play the file type that WPON broadcasts in online. I wound up downloading an old version of Winamp (the newer version isn't compatible with Windows 98...go figure!). Anyway, I can get the WPON feed on this comp in case my XP machine is still down by Wednesday. Well, its going on 2:00 AM so I think it's time I get to bed. Good Night!

Posts: 519 (07/12/09 06:23:19) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Mary Jane and I had a great weekend at the MARC (Michigan Antique Radio Club) Extravaganza in Lansing. As usual, I bought more than I needed but got some great bargains. Since it is so easy to link to Photobucket, here are a couple of pictures... A year ago or a year from now, they would have been lucky to get $5 for this record player. It went for $45 in the auction, and I suspect the winner will e-bay it and get considerably more. In general the auction prices were considerably lower than they would have gotten just a few years ago. For example, back in the 30's they had a type of plastic called Catalin. It was generally made in bright colors and it was relatively cheap (or as they said back in the 30's, "...comes in a variety of gay colors." I don't think they'd say that today.) It was also used for costume jewelry, bracelets are a good example. It is sometimes incorrectly called Bakelite - bakelite comes in only brown or black (although it can be painted any color) and it is ALWAYS opaque. Catalin is translucent (light will pass through it but you can't see through it). The filler that is added to Bakelite makes it opaque and brown or black. It also makes it much more dimensionally stable, Catalin warps and cracks over the years; Bakelite does not. They're all brittle and break easily. Anyway, this is a Catalin radio, known as a Fada model 100 (or commonly called "The Bullet" by collectors). A couple of years ago this radio would have gone for $2,000. Yesterday it sold for $400. This TV is called the Philco Predicta "Princess" A neat looking set - but the Predicta almost singlehandedly brought Philco to bankruptcy in the early 60's. If you happen to see one of these for sale, and think, "Wow, I'd like to have this fixed and put it on display!, think again. No doubt you've seen TVs from that era, with much larger cabinets. Note how small this cabinet is. They had just as much stuff inside as any other TV of the time, but when you cram all those heat-producing parts into a small place, it becomes an oven and electronics don't like heat. Major, expensive parts commonly fail and many failed while the TV was under warranty. Picture tubes were a common failure item as well, and another example of engineering that brought them to bankruptcy. I won't explain the technicality of deflection angle in a picture tube, just accept that the wider the angle the shorter the tube is, The very early sets were like 25 or 30 degree, they might be 2 feet long and have a 5" picture, Technology improved; by the late 40's early 50's they went to 55 degrees, then 70, then 90. The screen got larger and the tube got shorter. In the late 50s they developed the 110 degree tube which became the standard for portable sets for many years. But even the 110 degree tubes were too long for what the Philco stylists wanted. They developed a 114 degree tube and it was a couple of inches shorter. But nobody jumped on the bandwagon. One bad feature about wider deflection angles (using the technology of the time) was that the screen became more bowl-shaped - it had to be or the focus changed between the edge and center of the screen. So the Predicta used this oddball 114 degree tube and nobody else used it. It was driven hard and it failed electrically in short order. There were other picture tubes of that size used in those days - but none would work in that set. Physically you could not fit a 110 degree tube in that set because it was too long. There is a company today building modern sets using the Predicta styling and they are much better than the original Philco sets. Enough babbling about the Predicta. We haven't figured out what this radio cabinet came from, but several of us agree, "It looks like something that came out of a whorehouse". Or maybe Liberace's house... Finally (I though he'd never shut up!) I got a radio I've been looking for for about 20 years. It is called the "Adam and Eve radio. It's not old, it's a transistor radio made in 1977. Still having to use my old Dell to access the web. I can't do much other than e-mail and IM. It's starting to drive me nuts. My cousin is checking my newer comp for problems. It seems the hard drive is fine. If I am lucky its just a bad cable somewhere. Other possibilities include the mother board going bad, the processor going bad or the power supply going bad. My cousin happens to have a motherboard with processor if either of those are bad (gotta replace the whole board though as the CPU socket is different) but the power supply could be more of a problem. Oh, Huggy, that "%#% house" radio kind of looks like it was made to match spanish or mexican styled furniture. That cabinet almost looks home made or at the least like it was "customized" to look like that. Just my opinion anyway. I bet in the right setting it looked nice.But, in the wrong setting, it probably looked much as you described it. Ok, I am off for now.

And yes I'm sure you know about the old amps. Fender, Marshall and others are still making tube amps, although the tubes come from Russia or China because they haven't made tubes in the USA since the late 70's - early 80's. I understand Fender is making vacuum tube tweed amps currently. There is another interesting thing. I'm sure you're familiar with the Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster and the Gibson Les Paul. Original ones from the 50's are BIG bucks. They are also making some today that are identical to the old ones - well, almost... There is one electronic component used in the old ones that used to be very common, but has not been made for years. They have a greatly improved version today - smaller, cheaper and will last forever, the original part hasn't been made since the mid 60's. In addition to being used in the guitars, they were also used in TVs, radios and industrial equipment of the time. In restoring TVs and radios of the 50's and 60's these parts are encountered all the time and they're usually bad, so often that you simply replace them when you encounter them - if they aren't causing trouble now, they will. Usually you just cut them out and throw them away because they're bad. They are notorious for drifting (changing value) and leaking (electrically developing unwanted paths internally) However, these have become staggeringly popular. Rather than throwing away the old ones, put them on ebay and people will buy them! We laugh about how crazy the people are who want these in their guitars. A .022 mylar cap costs about 35 cents...I have gotten as much as $26 each for used, 50 year old Bumble Bees. There are companies making genuine imitation look-alikes and you can get them for $40 or so. So I can replace bad capacitors in a radio, sell the old ones and the price I get for the old, decrepit ones pays for all the new ones and puts a few bucks in my pocket. The Adam and Eve radio is interesting. I put a battery in it (9 volt) and tried it out. It works great. The battery and speaker are in Eve and the rest of the radio is in Adam. The battery goes into Eve's back - perhaps not the most logical place, but they didn't want to get TOO graphic, I guess. There are also no markings on the tuning dial (on the top of Adam's head) - you have to guess and listen to find your station. But I suspect they didn't think anyone was actually going to play that radio. On the box it says "AM radio 7 and conversation piece". And you must have both pieces in order for it to work. I feel that the volume and tuning knobs should have been Eve's "breasts". It would seem more logical to me and would also take the inuendo to the right place. Being that the radio had two halves it should have had an FM tuner as well as AM and a speaker in both Adam and Eve. What a poorly thought out product on so many levels! As to the unidentified radio, it's not my style but, like I said, in the right setting it would look good. As you said yourself it would have fit in with your Mother-in-law's stuff. To me its too ornate and I dont particularly care for the light color. I like the darker browns you more often see on those older radios. Well that's all from me for now. God am I getting tired of using this old Dell! Hopefully my cousin will find the problem with my newer computer soon so that I won't be stuck with such outdated software that won;t let me do many things I took for granted on the other comp. I can't do as much on the Dell as I can on the XP computer but one thing I can do is listen to the show and write my weekly e-mail to Benny! So here it is: B-B-B-Benny and the Jets...dot com Hey Benny, I got the web feed playing maybe a minute or so late. I caught the end of "If you think I'm sexy" or whatever that Rod Stewart song is and I heard you saying how you should start saying "dot com" during the Elton John tune...I laughed. Your mic is really low. The music, Doc Franklin and even "?" on the phone are all louder than you. You need to tell the Doc to turn you up! It's cool that the doc has the phone situation working again. Did he get a new phone or just a new hookup? Ok, there "?" goes mentioning being from Mars....and I was starting to think he only comes out weird on TV from the way they edit him. LOL Ya know, what Doctor Franklin said about "how do you choose to develop that talent?" because not everyone has musical talent....well you don't always need to have talent to pursue it. There are plenty of people that get record deals who have little or no talent. Some only look good on stage and the corporate machine turns then into stars anyway. OK, the Doc turned your mic up and now your mic is a bit too loud compared to the Doc's. I am sitting here typing this e-mail and wishing I had my other computer back already. I am accessing my AOL account through AOL.com and while I can do the same stuff I just don't like the way it looks compared to what I am used to. I suppose I could always install AOL on this computer but I don't want to have to do that. Especially since I don't plan to be using this computer any longer than necessary. I am a bit confused how the folks at Radioshack could help Doctor Franklin figure out how to run his cell phone through the mixing board and yet they can't help me find a wired headset to work on my cell phone. Everything is "blue tooth" now. Even the cheapest blue tooth headset would be more than my phone was! But my phone isn't blue tooth compatible so the price isn't the most ompartant aspect I suppose. Hmm, I couldn't tell what song that was at first when the Doc started the Lenny and Squiggy song because all I could hear was bass drum. He needs to back off that bass on the EQ. I am wondering though how much is the Doc's EQ settings and how much is me using a different computer. I am using the same speaker system as always but different soundcard and an older version of Winamp (can't use a new version of any program on this Windows 98 computer...UGH!) I am tempted to go upstairs and grab my cell phone to call in when you give away those tickets to the "Ultimate Doo Wop Show". Of course the Doc would probably play a song for the tickets that I have no clue about. Besides, since you call me your buddy on the air other listeners might find it unfair if I happened to win. Imagine the controversy! LOL I think whoever the Doc is talking to on the phone...he says it's Rick from Brighton. is listening through the radio or computer....no he says he isn't but if he had the delay like I did then that would explain why he wasn't hearing you. Did I just hear Dr. Franklin say Annette Funicello died? I had read last week that she was not doing well. but Hadn't seen anything else. I'm telling you, when you guys stop doing the show at Pete's COney Chelsie will either miss you guys or be really relieved LOL. The Doc just has to much fun teasing her. Ah, there Chris called in and asked if he heard correct like I was wondering about Annette Funicello. LMAO! Could the Doc have made that any easier? Playing Beach Blanket Bingo and asking what movie the song was from? And thats not really a song you can cut out the part that gives it away since the title is repeated more than any other phrase in that song. I agree with you that one of the best celebrity "singers" is the Mohammed Ali version of "Stand By Me". No, No! The Bel Air drive-in was on 8 mile just east of Van Dyke. There is still a theatre there but now it's an indoor theatre. It's a good thing there aren't many drive-ins around anymore. You'd be giving all the young kids ideas about stuffing all their buddies in the trunk. Ten people in the car and only one has a ticket. Ahhh, brings to mind that Cheech and Chong routine. I am so tempted to go get my cell phone and call in. With my luck that's when the Doc would start having phone trouble again. I havent used the phone today so it;d cost a dollar but the actual call would be free since the Doc has AT&T. I suppose I could always call on the land line phone. It'd probably cheaper than the $1-a-day access fee on the cell. But I don't pay the long distance bill so I try not to add to it. That song is from "Grease" of course! "Beauty School Drop out". I even got it typed before the Frankie Avalon sang it! What odd lyrics for a generally sweet melody. LOL, yes it was "breaker 1-9" and "what's your 20?" and all of that on the CB. Hmm. I dont know the singer but I know the song playing is "I'm Through With Love". I have two versions of that, one is by Chuck Berry and the other is by a jazz singer named Jane Monheit (I like the Chuck Berry version best). OMG! Woody Allen? Yeah it definitely wasn't Elvis. Ok, lets be correct Benny, it wasn't "The Beach Boys" it was "the touring Beach Boys (Mike and Bruce)" that were at Casino Windsor last weekend. I would have gotten a ticket but now you need that card to go across the river as you mentioned. They are also playing at Casino Rama in Canada I think this coming weekend or the following weekend. I think that card would cost more than the ticket! My friend had offered to drive me but we'd both need that card to get into Canada even if he didn't go to the show. We need to get the Beach Boys to play back here in Michigan so people can take their kids or grand kids. At the casino you had to be 19 to attend. No problem for me but I think it's sad that people couldn;t take their kids to let them experience what they grew up with. Oh man have I got a headache! Must be the weather. I went with Milton like the cartoon toaster they used to have in commercials for Kellogg's Pop Tarts. For one thing a computer is shaped kind of like a toaster. For another thing one of the parts in it is now "toast" (still waiiting to hear from my cousin as to which part it is that is bad). So, if I am lucky I will have "Milton" back soon. As to your question about the topic moving to the top, as far as I know thats the way all message boards work. The topic with the most recent post goes to the top so that it's easier to find. On the other hand posts within that topic/thread are always shown in the order in which they were posted (though some boards show the newest posts first while others show the oldest first). Oh, back to Milton for a moment: It seems that my cousin no longer has the mother board and processor that he was going to use if my board was bad (he said it was in a box he told his wife to throw out and none of his computer buddies have a board that would work anymore....now I wish I had told him I'd take it back when he first offered it to me...even though I had no use for it at that time). All is not lost though as we are not sure if it's the MoBo or the power supply that is toast (get it? Milton the toaster? the part is toast?) So, we are gonna make a trip to Micro Center so I can pick up a new power supply (you can return a power supply if it doesnt do what you need but not a mother board). If that solves my problem then I will have Milton back soon. If it doesn;t solve my problem then I will have to consider whether I want to get a new board or a new system or what. If I get a new board then I also have to get all new memory as my current board has the older DDR memory rather than DDR2 or DDR3. Oh and I would also need a new processor. Essentially getting a new board would be like building a new system but I would still be uisng my Windows XP operating system. If I were to just buy a new system that is already built then I would be getting WIndows Vista which would be kinda silly when there is Windows 7 coming out in a few months (although I did get my XP machine right before Vista came out but that wasnt a bad thing since my scanner only works on Vista with the help of a patch I downloaded and it wouldnt have worked on Vista at all). I'd really like to build a new system from the ground up. I just don't want to do it out of necessity...especially since I don't have the money to do so. I figure by the time I get around to building my own HAL...or in my case Milton 2.0...I will just invest in a new scanner. But, to replace my scanner simply because I need to replace my computer wouldn't feel right to me (I have never been one to get new just for the sake of new and I have never been of the mind that just because something is old means it's no longer good). Probably not. Aside from damage it might do to the record it didn't seem to have a consistant sound in the video (seemed like it would slow down then speed up again). On another subject: I just ordered a new power supply for "Milton". I was gonna buy one at Micro Center but me and my cousin did some searching online and found one that has more power for around the same price....cheaper if I can manage to get the rebate. The down side is that the warranty is only a year where as I saw a different one online that had a 3 year warranty. (what can I say? I'm cheap and I like to find the best deals I can!) Granted you don't always get use out of the longer warranties. The original power supply is just under 3 years old. So with luck this new one will last at least as long as the original one. All of this is, of course, dependent on the power supply being the actual problem....so keep your fingers crossed for me...and for Milton.

They can fail before the warranty expires, or live far beyond it. I have one radio here, a Majestic model 93. It's had a few tubes replaced over the years, and I replaced about 6" of rotted ruber wire, but it is 99% original, original wiring, original capacitors, even the original line cord. It was built in January, 1930. Grigsby-Grunow (manufacturer of this radio) died in 1935 during the depression. Some things last even longer...there is a bulb in Firestation #6 in Livermore, CA that was first installed in 1901 and it is still burning today. They even have a live webcam if you want to watch it. Livermore's Centenial Bulb There is also one in a theatre in Texas that just passed 100 years old and it still works. I got a couple of radios last weekend, one was a beat up, hideous looking Jewel clock radio I got for parts. Early 60's not sure. It looked complete, so I plugged it in before I set to hack it up. It works and works well! The clock is bad...but maybe I won't be so fast to hack it up. It seems to be all original and was probably a cheap radio to begin with. They showed it on an episode of Mythbusters. They noted that it has a much heavier fillament than modern bulbs. Also, it isn't quite as bright as the average modern bulb. As for warranties, I agree with you to an extent. Unless a company stands behind their warranty (and unless a product breaks down during the warranted time period) a warranty isn't always worth the paper it's printed on. That being said, I have learned that often it can pay to get the extended warranty. I used to think if the product doesnt last the year or so of the manufactuer's warranty then why should you pay for the extended warranty from the store? But, we have had a few items where that extended warrant yreally paid for itself Granted you are kind of gambling on whhether you will need the extended time. If you don;t then it's just a total waste of money but, if you need it, it is well worth the price. Of course this goes back to the people standing behind it and doing what the warranty says. Anyway, I am hoping to get Milton's new power supply sometime this week (I didn't pay for the express shipping but I think it may come sooner than the estimated 5 to 7 business days....or at least I hope it does). That's the bad thing about this particular message board setup. There is no moderator who can delete these kinds of posts. Not only should such posts be deleted but the posters should be denied access to the Yuku site. If they want to advertise here that's fine and dandy, they can pay for ad space like the companies that help keep this a free service. If I were from one of the companies that pays to advertise on Yuku it would kinda piss me off that some jerk was piggy-backing on my dime to advertive what is probably a fly-by-night operation. OK, stepping down of the soap box. Someone really needs to get that thing outta here! It's too tempting for some of us to get up on it LOL. Catch you all later!
